Launch of DIMECC’s Sea for Value program ensures steps towards remote pilotage and safer fairway navigation

The new DIMECC Sea for Value program (S4V) provides blueprints towards digitalisation, service innovation and information flows in maritime transport. Its longer-term mission is in preparing for advanced autonomous operations and navigation. The program kick-off takes place February 24th in Helsinki.

DIMECC S4V is a transformative program that aims for wide societal influence by providing concrete research-based recommendations on regulation, business, data usage and sharing as well as for standardization for maritime transportation. The implementation of the program will consist of several projects. The first project focuses on developing and experimenting future fairway services including remote pilotage.

“We see that utilising modern technology can enable new pilotage services. The aim is to demonstrate and experiment important milestones on the journey towards smart and autonomous maritime transport system. We are happy to have DIMECC programs implementing technologies that are on the roadmap of One Sea”, says Pilotage Director Sanna Sonninen from Finnpilot Pilotage.

“Safer and more efficient solutions are crucial in the cruise business. Participating in DIMECC S4V helps us to be at the forefront of development and we shall work together with other partners to ensure the smooth deployment of new technologies”, continues R&D director Kari Sillanpää from Meyer Turku shipyard.

DIMECC Sea for Value is a joint co-creation program of industry, research and authorities. The first project, named “Fairway”, is funded by Business Finland and its industrial partners. The next projects under the program will address maritime digitalisation to support One Sea targets of safer, more efficient and sustainable maritime transport and logistics chain. The program structure and model follows DIMECC’s previous programs such as LIFEX, where industrial change has been implemented in series of projects.

“DIMECC Sea for Value is an open program and new partners are welcomed in future projects”, says Seppo Tikkanen, who is the program manager for S4V.

Impact and Benefits to both Economy and Environment

There will be substantial growth in revenue and number of jobs in Finland in exploiting the growing market of smart and autonomous maritime technology in the future. DIMECC Sea for Value will allow the program consortia to tap into new opportunities in creating smart and autonomous products and services.  Environmental benefits come from more efficient solutions thus reducing emissions.

“DIMECC Sea for Value program is closely linked to One Sea roadmap in creating safer, more efficient and sustainable maritime transport through utilisation of digital opportunities. Implementing the program will definitely take us closer to realization of One Sea vision, which is to an operating autonomous maritime ecosystem by 2025”, says Jukka Merenluoto, Senior Ecosystem Lead of One Sea, an open alliance for global commercial organizations committed to leading maritime autonomy.
